My store has been down for almost 3 weeks, and I am in the process of
transferring to a new host. dreamhost customer service has been extremely slow,
frequently choosing to file my service requests into one person or another's
folder, rather than tell me anything. When I have heard back, I have been given
varying promises of attention and a fix, but nothing has happened, and no one
has bothered to tell me why.



Key to the whole problem is the apparent fact that dreamhost has not a clue of
what e-commerce is all about. While other hosts might be in a full-blown panic
if their e-commerce sites were down for a couple of hours, dreamhost is quite
content to allow the situation to go on indefinitely. Very unprofessional in
their approach.



I know of several other dreamhost Miva sites that are transferring, or have
transfered, to new hosts. So, most likely in the near future they will be
hosting very few Miva sites, and their competence in the area can be expected to
fall even further.

I'm quite happy that is short as this means I haven't had any big problem during
these months. Just 2 things to add to what I wrote in the past:



I've had seldom connectivity problems to our websites, I couldn't always check
if it was hostgator problem or other problem related to my connectivity but
sometimes it really looked like it was hostgator problem.

I'm just talking about few times for some minutes. Not really a problem for us.



The only really annoying thing it happened is that once one of our website
(vagabondo.net) has been discontinued because it loaded too much the server.
Generally speaking suspending a site because is loading too much the server
could even be a positive thing (you prevent the whole server sites to slow down
too much, you can have time to see if someone is "attacking" the server or the
site ecc.). What I'm complaining about is:



1) We received no warning about it, not before, not after the site was
suspended!!! We just realized it, wrote to support and got an answer after few
hours.



2) We received no details about the excessive load the server was experiencing
becasue of our site, no detail about where the problem could lie (too many sql
queries? too many hits? heavy php proccesses? ecc. ecc.) so as to understand
better if this could happen again and possibly how to solve the the problem.



All in all this leaves you with a scary impression: it just happened one time
but it could happen anytime not knowing why it happened (and why it stop
happening!).



Having said that I still think hostgator provide a good service (that needs
improving though) and can confirm what I wrote in previous review.

Zoho Doubles Customer Count in 5 Months, Racing Google Apps to 1 Million User Mark

When I first met Raju Vegesna at the Office 2.0 conference last October, Zoho had just passed the 100,000 user mark. Less than 5 months later, Raju says they're closing in on 200,000.

While Nielsen/NetRating (PDF) claims that Google has a 92% share of the web-based productivity apps market, Raju points out that Zoho and ThinkFree together attract as many unique visitors as Google Docs and Spreadsheet. (See Ismael Ghalimi's elaboration on the user count discrepancy.) 432,156 users visited Google Docs last December; that's 3% fewer than in October. Zoho, on the other hand, has undergone rapid growth (as CEO Sridhar Vembu puts it, "we try harder") - and hopes to beat Google to the 1 million user goal.

By the way, when Raju and I were introduced, a colleague of his described him as Zoho's PR strategist. I just found out that in addition to attracting favorable coverage in every possible media outlet, he was also in charge of company's data center infrastructure. (Raju recently managed to offload this responsibility.) He insists it wasn't as much work as it sounds, because Zoho's apps run on a self-healing grid that's attached to a pool of standby servers. If any application server dies, the appropriate code will automatically be deployed on one of the standby machines. The failed hardware can be swapped out whenever someone has time. As for customer data, everything is replicated three times and backed up offsite.

(Zoho's Rackable servers are colo-ed at Savvis and Equinix. They're in the process of migrating from 32 bit to 64 bit machines with dual core Intel Woodcrest processors and 8 to 16 GB of RAM. The new machines arrived last week, but won't be deployed until late March. As Google's recent hard drive study shows, a longer burn-in period can help weed out faulty hardware.)

Zoho's HR processes are similarly efficient. Adventnet, Zoho's parent company, has 600 employees (and counting). Whenever a new Zoho product is conceived, a dedicated team of 2-6 developers is allocated to the project. Having rapid access to talent gives Zoho a tremendous competitive advantage. Forget Google Office; the loooong list of ideas and partnerships that Zoho's in the process of implementing might coalesce into Zoho Life: single sign on access to an ever growing suite of fully integrated web apps that do... everything.

Keep an eye on Zoho; they're setting the standards for delivering a seamless SaaS experience. And sign up for an account if you don't already have one. Lastly, stay tuned. They've got some big announcements on the way.

April was a bit more active than March. I am getting some good "vibes" pre HostingCon and ISPCON was better than expected. My firm closed a couple of transactions which is always nice. So here we go...

Laguna Niguel, CA -- Alentus Corporation (ALNS) acquired Austin, Texas-based Website Source, Inc. (Shared) and SpeedFox, Inc. (Dedicated). The deals add $2.6M in annual revenue to Alentus. Tom Millitzer President of NCC-New Commerce Communications (This blogger) represented Website Source and Speedfox in the transactions.

Dublin, Ireland - Digiweb, has acquired web hosting Novara, as well as its host.ie and register.ie brands. Digiweb serves 22,000 hosting customers, 32,000 broadband customers and has 140 Employees.

Boston, MA - ABRY Partners acquired Raleigh, NC based Hosted Solutions for $140 million. Hosted Solutions has several East Coast data centers and provides managed services. Paul Stapleton of DH Capital represented Hosted Solutions in the transaction.

Scottsdale, AZ - Vilocity Interactive Inc. recently expanded its client roster and presence on the East Coast with the acquisition of a Boston-based WebNesting a hosting and site development firm.

San Mateo, CA – SAS provider Etelos, Inc. (Public, OTC: ETLO) completed reverse merger into Tripath Technology. Company has a market cap of $210 million.

Nottinghamshire UK - Timico Group acquired Twang.net Limited, a UK-based a specialist in fully managed solutions.

Renton, WA - Parallels, has acquired ModernGigabyte, the ModernBill automated billing system and other hosting automation solutions. ModernGigabyte provides software to nearly 15,000 hosting resellers with more than 2 million customers worldwide.

Plano, TX - Layered Technologies, Inc., acquired of FastServers.net, a Chicago-based managed hosting company. I ran into FastServers founder Ian Andrusyk at ISPCON…he was very relaxed.

Mississauga, ON - Hostopia (TSX: H) acquired the customer assets of Web hosting provider Luxomovera, operating as uplinkearth.com. Reportedly an all-cash offer that will migrate some 12,500 customers Hostopia's facilities.

Fairfax, VA - mindSHIFT Technologies acquired Collaboration Online, better known as groupSPARK. Collaboration Online provides Shared & Dedicated Exchange data center and other server side services.
